Oktoberfest is the World’s largest beer and folk festival. It traditionally takes place in Munich, Bavaria, in Southern Germany from mid-September through the beginning of October.

Oktoberfest began in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The celebrations held for the newlyweds were deemed so great by the Royals themselves that they wanted to repeat it every year!

Oktoberfest has been celebrated in Munich every fall since then, and today it is a world-renowned event – 2016 saw 5.9 million people attend the celebrations in Munich alone, consuming over 6 million litres of bier!

The festival consists of giant tents, or Bierhalles, that house thousands of revellers enjoying the delights of the Bavarian breweries and traditional Bavarian cuisine.  Oompa music accompanies the afternoon jubilations which normally gives way to more modern pop music in the evening.

The event is becoming increasingly popular and prevalent in other cities across the globe, and the UK is no exception! So don your Lederhosen and fend off the beginning of autumn with a warm and friendly atmosphere filled with fun and laughter!
